I am an emerging researcher, writer and curator, and hold an MA in colonial history from the University of Bristol and an undergraduate degree in modern history from the University of Glasgow. In January 2013 I will be returning to Glasgow to commence doctoral studies, jointly supervised by the university’s History of Art Department and the Humanities Advanced Technology and Information Institute. Funded by the UK Arts & Humanities Research Council, my doctoral project seeks to create a dialogue between the history of the British Empire and those public exhibitions that showcased the material culture of non-European peoples to British publics. This object-based approach, which is focused on examining the movement of objects from periphery to metropole, will enable a reassessment of the history of the relationship between these two colonial locales. Additionally, it will reveal how collections and displays both illustrated and reinforced dominant notions of empire and imperial self-perceptions. I also have a strong interest in contemporary art and have worked in contemporary galleries both in the UK and Canada.
