Dr. Rosaline Canessa is a faculty member in the Geography Department at the University of Victoria and the director of the Coastal and Ocean Resource Analysis Lab (CORAL). Her research interests include integrated coastal management, multiple use planning, marine protected areas, collaborative and participatory GIS, marine geovisualisation, community mapping, and Marxan and Marxan for Zoning. Past and current research projects includes collaborative use of Marxan for zoning marine protected areas, seascape visualization of Bowie Seamount Marine Protected Area, place attachment and coastal community mapping of Saanich Inlet (British Columbia, Canada), protected areas and poverty reduction in Canada, Tanzania and Ghana, and First Nations capacity building for coastal planning. Before joining the University of Victoria, Dr. Canessa worked as a marine environmental scientist in Scotland, the Caribbean and Canada. Her work related to planning and environmental impact assessment for integrated coastal management, offshore hydrocarbon development, fisheries, aquaculture, marine recreation and tourism, and marine protected areas.
