I began the serious study of literature in high school. As an undergraduate, I gave guest lectures on Chaucer, Wycherley, and Proust; studied French, philosophy and history as well as literature in English; and published a translation from the French of François Villon. In graduate school I specialized in the history and theory of the novel; my doctoral dissertation was a translation of Raymond Queneau’s book of essays Bâtons, chiffres et lettres, with a general introduction to his work. Part of this translation, Queneau's preface to Bouvard and Pécuchet, was recently published with Mark Polizzotti's translation of the novel (Dalkey Archive, 2005). Continuing interests also include American history and policy.
