Paul Hertz is an independent artist who teaches art history and new media studio courses at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. From 1995 to 2003, he taught in the departments of Radio, Television and Film and the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, where he was Co-Director, 2003-04, and Visiting Artist, 2001-2002, at the Center for Art and Technology. He also served as Collaborative Applications Developer, 1999-2009, in the Collaboratory Project, Northwestern University. Hertz’s curatorial work includes the online exhibition “LaFinca/The Homestead,” 1996, Second Nature, at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago for the City of Chicago’s Project Millennium, 1999, and Imaging by Numbers, at the Block Museum, Northwestern University, 2008. His open source software applications GlitchSort and IgnoCodeLib have been used by many digital artists. His most recent work involves algorithmic procedures, glitch and the reconstruction of social memory. His digital prints and interactive installations have been exhibited in many international media festivals and symposia.
