Patricia Eaton is a native of Belfast, Northern Ireland and studied at Queen’s University, Belfast from 1988 to 1995, leaving with a first class honours degree in Pure Mathematics, a PhD in Topology (a branch of Pure Mathematics) and a PGCE in Mathematics with ICT. Having taught mathematics in a local grammar school she then joined the staff of Stranmillis University College in Belfast in 2000 and continues to teach mathematics to prospective teachers. She has worked extensively on mathematics education and received a number of research grants to explore the area of mathematical identity in collaboration with colleagues from the Republic of Ireland. She takes an active interest in encouraging others to enjoy mathematics and has been involved in bringing Maths Week Ireland, an annual event promoting mathematics, to Belfast. She is a member of the Mathematics Association, has been Chair and Secretary to the local Irish branch of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
