Olaia Fontal Merillas: (Barakaldo, 1975) has a degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU, another one in Art History and a PhD in Educational Sciences —the latter two from the University of Oviedo, where she received the Prize for Best Doctorate Student in 2003 after submitting her doctoral thesis “La educación patrimonial. Definición de un modelo integral y diseño de sensibilización”. She is currently tenured lecturer in Plastic Art Didactics at the University of Valladolid. She is the author of publications like “La educación patrimonial: teoría y práctica en el aula, el museo e Internet” (Ediciones Trea, 2003), “Comunicación educativa del patrimonio” (Ediciones Trea, 2004), Miradas al patrimonio (Ediciones Trea, 2006) or “Museos de arte y educación” (Ediciones Trea, 2007), as well as a number of publications in scientific journals (IJIM, C&E, Arbor, Cadmo, etc.). She was lead researcher in the research project “SHEO: Spanish National Education Observatory: A Comprehensive Analysis of the Current State of Heritage Education in Spain” and at present leads a new project called “Heritage Education in Spain: Consolidation, Evaluation of Programmes and Internationalization”. She is also a researcher in the research project "Análisis de las fórmulas de exclusión educativa en las aulas de educación secundaria obligatoria y espacios patrimoniales: modelos para una educación inclusiva a partir del patrimonio cultural” (Recercaixa) and the principal researcher in a research group included in the International excellence Network "RED 14: Red de investigación en enseñanza de las Ciencias Sociales". She has directed eight PhD dissertations on heritage education.
