Born in the Netherlands towards the end of World War II, Dr NONJA PETERS was a young child when her family emigrated to Western Australia in 1949. The subject of her PhD (2000) was immigrant enterprise. Her current research focus is the 400 years of Dutch Australian connections, her special focus the Dutch diaspora postwar. The permanent and travelling exhibitions she has curated include- A New Australia: Postwar Migration to Western Australia, 1996 at the Western Australian Museum and A Sense of Place: Postwar Migration to Northam, 1998 at the Northam Visitor Centre. Her book Milk and Honey but no Gold: Postwar Migration to Western Australia from 1945–1964 (2001) was short-listed for three State Premier’s literary awards. In 2003 she received a Centenary Medal for the preservation of Dutch and other migrant’s cultural heritage in Australia. In 2006 she was made Knight of the Order of Oranje Nassau by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in recognition of her services to the Dutch community in Australia and her work on bilateral relations. Her most recent book is The Dutch Down Under 1606–2006. The paper she submitted is on research for an ARC grant on refugees in the Australian labour market.
