Dr. Portus finished her AB, MA and PhD at the University of the Phillippines. She teaches communication theory, research and management in both undergraduate and graduate levels while concurrently serving as the College Secretary of the College of Mass Communication. She has published a book “The Streetwalkers of Cubao” as well as several articles, in refereed journals, on the subjects of mobile phones, gay language and communication education. An upcoming publication, "How the Urban Poor Acquire, Interpret and Give Meaning to the Mobile Phone," is expected to be released by the MIT Press and Athe Rutgers University. She has presented academic papers and researches in both local and international conferences in countries, such as, Malaysia, Mexico, Thailand, Korea and Vietnam. Before joining the academe Dr. Portus served as a manager of various non-governmental and social development organizations. Presently, she acts as consultant of government and non-governmental organizations where she conducts research and training activities.
