Komla Tsey is Research Professor and Senior Fellow at James Cook University’s School of Education and The Cairns Institute in Cairns, North Queensland Australia. Komla was born and educated in Ghana. After a BA honours degree from University of Ghana in 1980, Komla studied for a PhD at Glasgow University, Scotland, from 1982-1986. He returned to University of Ghana where he developed partnerships with rural development associations implementing long term research and development projects aimed at improving the availability and access to facilities such as schools, health services, water and sanitation, income generation, and electrification for rural communities. Since the 1990’s Komla has been living and working in Australia but continues to undertake longitudinal studies of community development projects Ghana. In Australia Komla worked at Menzies School of Health Research as Head of the Central Australian Unit in Alice Springs and as one of 5 inaugural Program Leaders for the Cooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal Health Research. Since 2001, Komla has been the Program Leader for 10-year program of empowerment research involving James Cook University, the University of Queensland and over a dozen community organisations and other government agencies. Komla has an extensive interdisciplinary research interests which include: Broad historical, cultural, economic and other social determinants of human wellbeing with particular reference to Ghana and Indigenous Australia ♦macro public policies and local community initiatives that promote social inclusion and equity ♦adult education, community development, empowerment, engagement and social participatory strategies ♦ Indigenous spirituality, resilience and wellbeing ♦ student engagement and education participation ♦program evaluation ♦research capacity building ♦university-community research partnerships ♦vulnerable communities and preparedness for global challenges including swine flu, other pandemics and climate change.
