JoAnne M. Podis received her doctorate in British Literature from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, US, writing her dissertation on the novels of Jane Austen. She is the co-author of two composition textbooks and has co-edited a volume of essays on teaching and tutoring writing, in addition to numerous journal articles and presentations at local, regional, and national conferences. Her primary research interests are writing pedagogy and feminist leadership, including women in popular culture; at Ursuline she teaches a senior seminar in the core curriculum that focuses on values in the novels of Jane Austen and film versions thereof, as well as a course in the history of the English language. She is keenly interested in issues of race, gender, and class and their effects on teaching and learning and will be part of a panel on class and pedagogy at a national conference in spring of 2006.
