James Ding obtained his LL.B (Hons) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Laws (Distinction) from the University of Hong Kong and LL.M. from the Kyushu University on the scholarship of the Japanese Government. He is now a Ph.D. candidate (part-time) at the University of Queensland, Australia. He became a barrister in Hong Kong in 1997. He is currently a senior government counsel at the Department of Justice in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China advising the Hong Kong Government on international legal issues including conservation of cultural heritage. He is also a member of the Cultural Heritage Law Committee of the International Law Association.
