Dr James Arvanitakis is an academic and lecturer in the humanities based at University of Western Sydney member of the University’s Centre for Cultural Research. Formerly a successful banker and economist, his research focus includes economic, environmental justice and the commodification of life.
James completed his PhD at the University of NSW in 2006. He has worked as a human rights activist throughout the Pacific, Asia and Europe. Having held various positions within human rights based organisations including Aid/Watch and Oxfam Hong Kong, he also founded The Commons Institute which is now part of the Centre of Policy Development – where he is a research fellow. Currently, he is also working with Oxfam Australia’s Youth Engagement Program.
James is also a regular media commentator, writes an active blog, has published a number of articles and his first book, 'The cultural commons of hope' is now available through VDM.
