Developing interest in the global and rapidly rising population of the elderly, occurs based on the fact that Nigeria is home to the highest population of old people in sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, the social context of ageing becomes a unique lens to view a myriad of interrelated factors evolving around policies, health and demographic issues. Hence, with a Bachelor degree in Sociology and Anthropology and a Master's degree in Sociology, the experience of teaching and review of over 200 literature in Ageing and Human nutrition fields, set the stage for a narrower engagement with the social dimensions of the nutritional challenges, adaptation and decisions of old people. This evolves around the complex relationships that the elderly have with their social network, care-givers and significant others. This consideration extends to the cultural and religious definitions of food as prescribed by culture and/or social standards which determine the inclusion and exclusion of certain foods from old people's diet. Previous engagements with quantitative and qualitative research techniques, writings on health systems functioning, papers in the areas of sociology of health, gender, development and demography are valuable levels of exposure that enable an appreciable engagement of ageing and nutrition as a research subject matter.
