A background in Special Education brought me to the study of Literacy with a focus on social justice in education by reaching and teaching marginalized students. For my Ph.D. I studied a school in Israel that succeeded in including all of its diverse students in a learning experience relevant to their lives (What Does it Take to Learn to Read? A Story of a School with Love, 2003). Since then I have been teaching Reading to undergraduates who come to college/university with poor reading skills, while also teaching Literacy courses to graduate students who are teachers.
In the past year I have created a Literacy program for adults in a home for recovering women where my goal is to help the women find their voices and potential for change in their relationships with the world through critical reading of texts (reading the world to read the word and reading the word to read the world – Paolo Freire).
