For over 30 years, I have been a museologist, employed primarily at the Art Gallery of Ontario, in Toronto, Canada. Over that time, my work involved a considerable amount of audience-based research into how members of the public interact with works of art. I focused on various types of learning and creative responses of viewers as they encountered artworks. In turn, this research lead to the development of experimental strategies for engaging visitors in focused behaviour that could lead to meaningful experiences. Exhibition development, writing of texts, producing audio and video materials all combined with the audience research to form an exciting laboratory for experimentation within the museum. When the World-Wide Web came along, my work expanded into this realm as well. In 1997, I had the good fortune to be invited to join "Leadership for Environment and Development" - a cross-disciplinary, global network committed to global/local sustainability. For the past dozen years, my research, teaching and publications have been focused on 'culture and sustainability'.
