Chronic disorders often require life changes. Yet health care professionals often attempt to dictate and structure these changes without consulting individual values and worldviews. My cross-cultural experience of working eight years in rural West Africa was formative in developing an appreciation for indigenous knowledge and experience. An additional seven years in an under-served urban Hispanic community, and current work for three years at an urban Native American Tribal clinic help me to continue to appreciate and improve my cross-cultural learning.
This led to my return to doctoral studies University of Michigan-Flint. This DNP program promotes a trans-cultural focus.
