Currently I am reading for my PhD at the department of Geography, University of Otago, NZ. I obtained my BA degree in 2000 in Sri Lanka with a first class honours division, and 2002/04 I completed my Mphil at the NTNU, Norway. Besides I attended the International Course (UNU-IC), which was conducted by the UNU, Tokyo, in 2005 and successfully completed the two courses on International Development and Global Environment: Science and Policy.
I served my service to various institutions including universities, research centres and NGOs. Since 2001 Feb to July, 2002, I worked as a University lecturer in Geography at the University of Kelaniya, SL. Currently I am on my study leave form the position of Lecturer, department of Geography, University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
I worked for UNU as a research assistant during the period of August 2004 to May 2005. I was mainly attached to conduct a questionnaire survey with varied institutions to explore the Capacity Building Initiatives for the Management of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs). Later I was assigned to another mini project on Sustainable Tourism and Cultural Heritage which was conducted by UNU, UNESCO and other South Asian partners.
As an academic person I have produced few articles to the reputed journals in Sri Lanka: including their titles of(1) Modernization of Rural Agricultural System and Social Change in Sri Lanka; (2)Impacts of Modern Farm Technology on the Rural Communities in Sri Lanka; A case of Meegalawe - Mahaweli system, (3)Millennium Development Goals and Sri Lankan Response: Poverty Alleviation and Gender Equity (4) A chapter in Dr. Nalini Hennayake (2004), Human Geography, Agriculture in Sri Lanka (5) Household income, Land and Poverty, Some empirical issues from Sri Lanka (upcoming) .
I have attended few workshops locally organized and a paper will be presented at the upcoming international DevNet Conference. My main interest is to work on development studies, especially rural issues, gender, social and environmental issues. At present I am forming my research area related to Sustainable Livelihoods with particular emphasis on Sri Lanka, special consideration of culture, exploring the potentiality of use of culture as a livelihood assets and a capital.
