Dr.Basavadatta Mitra joined BITS-Pilani Goa Centre, in April 2004.
Born in 1966, in Kolkata, West Bengal, she has a PhD. in English Literature- Machaivelli’s Influence on Shakespeare’s Tragedies and History Plays, to her credit from Rani Durgavati University, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh; she specializes in Renaissance drama. She has at the same time developed herself further as a resource person for the Teaching of English as Second/Foreign Language (TESOL/TEFL) as well as Teaching of English for Special Purposes (ESP), having acquired a PGCTE from Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL), Hyderabad and is a trained resource person for Business English Certificate Examination (BEC)/International English Language Testing Schemes (IELTS), Cambridge University, through British Council.
In the recent days she is working on an interface between Communication Skills and Human Values as part of Personality Development Course introduced by her at Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences-Pilani, Goa Campus. In this context she has, recently conducted a Workshop on Developing Effective Personality-Methodology and Materials for teachers of Polytechnic colleges in Goa.In the future, as part of the industry-institute interface she desires to specialize in the methodology of imparting education in human values as Spiritual Quotient, the newest of the quotients much sought after by most organizations in this era of Globalization.
Simultaneously, research work is on in the area of Cross-cultural Communication which will be developed into a training module for all industries under NASSCOM with a view to train human resource adept at working in a multi-cultural work environment. She has also been on the panel of evaluators for the PhD Qualifying Examination at Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences (BITS), Pilani, Goa Campus, Goa.
Three books for publication are in the pipe, the themes of which are:
1. Machiavelli’s Influence on Shakespeare’s Tragedies and History Plays.
2. Comic Relief in Shakespeare’s Tragedies with special reference to Macbeth and Hamlet.
3. Teaching Effective Communication Skills-Methodologies Revisited.
Her other areas of interest are ELT, Computational Linguistics and Socio-Linguistics where work is under way to bring in funded projects. She has been, regularly, participating in various workshops conducted by British Council, on different aspects of ELT, HORNBY ELT SEMINAR 2004 with substantial exposure to teaching of English as Second/foreign Language; the topic was Literature as a resource for Language Teaching.
Demonstrated the use of a Tagore Poem translated into English as material for Language teaching through a succinct presentation. Presently member of ELTecs (English Language Teachers’ Contact Scheme) under the aegis of British Council.
She has presented papers on such varied areas as -“Shakespeare as a Modern Management Guru”, “The Business of Business English”, “English in the New Millennium, on “Utility of a Language Laboratory for Technical Students” as part of a seminar conducted by IIT, Kharagpur, on the same subject and participated in a seminar on the Industry-Institute Interface, as a resource person; presented a paper-“Shakespeare as a Modern Management ‘Guru’”, in December 2003 at the International Shakespeare Conference held in Kolkata.. She has also been on the expert committee deliberating upon introduction of and drawing up of a Post Graduate course-M.A. in ELLT (English Literature and Language) under Netaji Subhas Open University, Kolkata. Prior to joining BITS, she has been working in various positions as visiting faculty (Marine Engineering and Research Institute, Kolkata and Institute of Modern Management, Kolkata) as well as full-time lecturer in Mallabhum Institute of Technology, Bishnupur, Bankura, West Bengal, where she set up the Language Laboratory as well as held the office of the Warden for the Girls’ hostel.
Presently is a member of ELTecs (English Language Teachers’ Contact Scheme), Life Member of the Shakespeare Society of Eastern Region.Member,Education committee ,Goa Chamber of Commerce ,Member, Asia Teaching of English as Foreign Languages(Asia Tefl) ,Indonesia
In the recent past she has addressed the Ladies’ Meet of Navy Wives Welfare Association (NWWA), where she has picked up the Women characters in Shakespeare as her central theme to talk of the changing role of Women in the Present Society and its influence on the GENERATIONEXT.She has addressed the students’ of IXth and XIth standards,Kendriya VIdyalaya-No.1,Vasco-da-Gama ,Goa on the issue of Reading as a Skill in the context of the Growing Importance of LIBRARY.Also,addressed the Passing out function ,as Guest of Honour,of Institute of Shipbuilding Technology,Goa on Values that make a Successful Professional.
