Avelina Espinosa is a biology faculty at Roger Williams University, USA. Her research programs include: the origin and evolution of anaerobic-dehydrogenase enzymes involved in cellular respiration; microbial bio-control and bio-management; the origin of taxa-, clone- and kin discrimination mechanisms in unicellular eukaryotes; and scientific analyses of diverse audiences’ views on evolution, science and pseudoscience. Dr. Espinosa is author of 40 publications: peer-reviewed studies, book chapters and popular media articles. She coordinates the Biotechnology Program at RWU and co-directs New England Science Public and the New England Center for the Public Understanding of Science; she hosts the annual Biology New England South (BioNES) meetings at RWU.
