Born in a remote village, Tavarau, Ba in the Fiji Islands, Asha grew up thinking that her village was the world. She began her journalism career as a cadet reporter on a national daily The Fiji Sun which was forced to close after the 1987 military coup. She then joined The Fiji Times and progressed to the various levels of news, staff and resource management within the corporate structure of News Limited, an international media conglomerate.
Whilst in the reporting arena and as the chief of staff of the newsroom, she nurtured her staff of 50 into an efficient newsgathering team, putting the daily paper as well as the weekend editions, including various sections, to bed. The wide-ranging duties involved strategic decision making right from the conceptual stages of news to writing, editing, and lay-out to print production.
She migrated to Australia in 1998 and transferred her industry skills into academia in 1999 when she joined the University of Western Sydney’s journalism program. Most importantly she is able to inspire and motivate her students with her own personal journey in the profession. She was joint winner of Carrick Australian Award for University Teaching, for outstanding contribution to student learning, in 2006 with colleague Barbara Alysen
