Antonio Torres-Ruiz holds an M.A. (Public Administration) and a Ph.D. (Development) in Political Science from the University of Toronto. He studied International Relations at El Colegio de México and Economics at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM). He was an Associate Researcher at the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE), in Mexico City, from 1995 to 1998, and a sessional lecturer at ITAM from 1995 to 1997. He has taught at the University of Toronto in the Department of Political Science and the Latin American Studies Program for the last 4 years. More recently, he joined York University’s new program in Human Rights and Equity Studies as full-time faculty. Antonio teaches courses in Human Rights and Equity, Latin American Politics, Global Political Economy, Political Systems and Democratization, and Sexual Diversity Politics. His contributions include book reviews and articles for International Journal (Canada), História, Ciencias, Saude (Brazil), Working Papers Series, CIDE (Mexico), and the Latin American Research Review (U.S.), as well as book chapters and an edited volume on contentious politics in North America. His doctoral dissertation, “An Elusive Quest for Democracy and Development in a Globalized World: The Political Economy of HIV/AIDS in Mexico,” is being revised for publication as a monograph.
