CGScholar Terminology

There are many terms used throughout CGScholar. In order to eliminate confusion, we have compiled some of the most used and most important terms here for you to review. The sections in the Table of Contents correspond to the areas within CGScholar where these terms occur most frequently. We highly recommend reviewing the document in its entirety, then reviewing pertinent sections as needed for reference. If there is a term that you believe should be added to this document, please submit a ticket and we will review the request to update this glossary.


CGScholar - General

CGScholar is a platform that seeks to become a trusted marketplace for knowledge work, one that rigorously democratizes the process of knowledge-making, rewards participants, and offers a secure basis for the sustainable creation and distribution of digital knowledge artifacts.


Community

An academic social network where you can build your profile, find peers, connect in communities -- or build your own.

Activity Stream

An overview of recent activity by a Scholar’s peers and in Communities to which they belong.

Peers

Users of Scholar who have mutually agreed to connect with each other, and to join shard communities of interest and concern.

Shares

Works, files and links shared to peers and among members of Communities.


Event

A tool to organize peer-reviewed blended academic events.

Asynchronous

An Asynchronous session is one that does not have set time restraints. Asynchronous sessions are delivered via Digital Media and discussed using the Discussion Boards. Presenters of Asynchronous sessions do not have a time slot for delivering a live presentation, nor do they have an assigned time to be available for questions.

Audience Member

An attendee of an Event with a paid Audience-Pass Registration. May be In-Person or Online-Only.

Audience Pass

A Registration to attend a CGRN Event without the ability to deliver an accepted proposal as a presentation. May be In-Person or Online-Only.

Digital Media

Material added to a Presentation Page for an In-Person or Online Event. Examples include: embedded video (YouTube, Vimeo), slide decks (PowerPoint), papers (PDF), and posters.

Discussion Board

Area connected to a Panel where Presentation Pages are discussed. In the in-person and online conference format, each Themed Panel has a discussion board.

Event Schedule

The live, active program of the in-person or online conference. The preliminary event schedule is listed online prior to the Event start date.

Follow

State of “subscribing” to a Presentation Page for updates to Digital Media or Discussion Board activity.

Microsite

Overarching section of Scholar dedicated to an Event with its own subpages related to the Event.

Presentation

A proposal that has a valid, unique, registration associated with it. May be Online Only with any valid Presenter Pass Registration, may be in person or online only with a valid In-Person Presenter Pass Registration.

Presentation Page

Page dedicated to a Proposal belonging to a Registered Event Delegate. Includes the Digital Media and information on the Proposal and shares a Discussion Board with other Presentation Pages in that Panel

Presenter

An attendee of an Event with a paid Presenter-Pass Registration and Accepted Proposal. May be In-Person or Online-Only.

Presenter Pass

A Registration to a CGRN Event allowing a delegate to deliver an accepted Proposal as a Presentation. May be In-Person or Online-Only. The purchase of a Presenter Pass does not guarantee the acceptance of any proposal.

Proposal

The Abstract, Theming, and Keywords for a potential presentation. Submitted to a CGRN Event.

Registration

A ticket for attendance at a CGRN Event. Registrations may be valid for either both in-person and online components (In-Person) or valid for only the online component (Online Only) of an Event and may be Presenter or Audience Passes. Registrations are on a per-event basis.

Themed Panel

A group of Presentations that are held in the same room for In-Person formats and share the same Discussion Board for Online formats. Usually grouped by Theme or Format.


Creator

A social writing space attuned to the nuances and rigor of scholarly communication.


Publisher

A social knowledge organizing tool tailored to peer review and recursive feedback.


Bookstore

A marketplace of ideas where creators can determine access and value.


CGScholar Credit

Credit system for the CGScholar Platform.
