Using CGScholar Community

This page is a guide to the Community area of CGScholar. If you do not find the answer to your questions on this page, please refer to the pages listed in the "Learn More About..." section at the bottom of this page or submit a support ticket using the buttons below the page.

Overview

CGScholar Community is a social Knowledge space for fostering collaboration and the exchange of ideas. Users can connect to Peers and To use Community, you will need to create a CGScholar account. If you already have a CGScholar Account, sign in to your account.

Before getting Started, you should complete your profile as much as possible. See our guide to updating your profile.

Adding Peers

From your Community Profile, you can add peers, either fellow researchers that you have already met, or potential collaborators who's work or input you've seen in other spaces of CGScholar.

To search for peers that you already know by name, click on the "Your Peers" link on your CGScholar Profile.

From here, you can search for peers by name. The search may be limited to one or all of the Organizations that you are a part of. All users of CGScholar are a part of the Scholar Open Organization, but you and your peers may belong to additional organizations.

When you find Peers, you may add them to your Peers directly from the search. You can also add a Peer directly from a User's profile. When interacting with Comments, Presentations or Discussion Boards, you can click on a User's name to view their profile and add them as a Peer.

Users who you have added as a Peer will need to approve your Peer request in order for you to connect. You can review your Peer Requests from the "Notifications" menu.

Joining Communities

Similarly to Peers, you can join Communities from your profile page by selecting the "Your Communities" link.

You can search for Communities within one or all of the Organizations that you are a part of. All CGScholar Users belong to the Scholar Open Organization, but you may belong to additional Organizations.

You can join Communities directly from the search. You'll also automatically join the Communities associated with any Events that you Register for or Submit a Proposal to.

Creating a Community

In addition to joining a Community, you can also create one from the "Your Communities" section of your profile. Begin by clicking the "Create Community" button and follow the steps.

You can control many aspects of the community such as the Organization that it is a part of, how users are able to join, the privacy of the updates, and how updates are made.

Posting and Engaging in Community

Once you have added Peers and joined Communities, you can engage with other scholars via updates and comments.

You can post an update about your research, such as a new publication, or a talk that you delivered via the updates section of your profile. If you are an Administrator for a Community, you can also create Updates for that Community from the Community page.

Adding topical comments to Updates within your Communities is also a great way to engage Peers and other Community members. Communities also automatically generate updates for new publications.

Updates from your Peers and Communities are visible within your Activity Stream on your profile. You can also view the Activity Streams of Specific Communities by navigating to their pages. Activity streams can be filtered to display only certain types of information.
