Design Inclusive Museums: From Theory to Practice in Design of Spaces

Abstract

Interior design for museums responds in a very singular way to the generalization of this professional activity; the dynamic of these spaces is focused in art appreciation, however, it is important to consider users as part of this dynamic. To solve the design of a normal space, we consider by practice and the some theories that we must have into account six main variables: circulation, distribution, ventilation, illumination, noise and communication. In order to recognize the priority of these variables and how they work for museums design, are conducted empirical research, interviews, surveys, project and documental analysis. Worldwide social context imposes particularities to formal factors in museum design. We cannot only respond to curation, the building type or to handicap people; gender identity and respect to diversity needs sensibility from designers. This is the reason why, in these spaces direct communication is not that important as subliminal communication from the design, never trying to compete against art pieces as main thing in these spaces. The objective of this research is to show a general scheme of element organization and to ponder a response based on the highest quantity of diverse users inside these spaces.
