Access through the Prism of Accessibility Facilities of Selected Museums and Open-air Ethnographic Parks: Photo-ethnographic Report

Abstract

The aim of the analysis is to obtain knowledge and understanding about the 1/ accessibility dimensions, 2/ limitations, and 3/ attitude to people with disabilities learned behind primary photo-ethnographic object-based inquiry on accessibility in selected 6 Polish National/District Museums (including branches) and 6 Open-air ethnographic parks. The visual data analysis in the case studies project is based on object-based inquiry and learning in museums (Paris 2002, Rowe 2002, Duhs 2010, Chatterjee, et al. 2015). Object-based inquiry was referred to the concept of small ethnography, and case studies report on facilities (material objects) designed for visitors with disabilities. Research questions include: What accessibility facilities (material objects) were designed to support access for people with various disabilities to museums/ethnographic parks? What accessibility limitations still exist in analyzed museums/ethnographic parks? What can be learned from accessibility facilities about attitude to people with disabilities in selected cultural institutions? A purposive sample contained 12 selected museums and open-air ethnographic museums. Data were collected between Jan 2019-Nov 2021. A total of 664 photographs were collected from the area of museums buildings, access to buildings, and interiors. Research results have shown the presence of accessibility objects relating to (spaces, ramps, trails, etc.). Findings indicate also different types of zoning accessibility and also lack of any accessibility objects, especially in open-air ethnographic museums. The analysis also shows the attitudes to visitors with disabilities which can be learned from the accessibility objects as acceptance, limited acceptance, contradictory acceptance, and lack of acceptance.
