Exploring the Funding Challenges Faced by Independent Arts Organisations in India: How Are Independent Art Organisations Able to Sustain an Open and Supportive Approach to the Development of Contemporary Art?

Abstract

This study addresses the lack of research on independent arts organisations in India and attempts to understand how these organisations are able to sustain an open and supportive approach towards contemporary arts in India. This study also explores how few organisations have managed to survive successfully whereas others have found it difficult and have been struggling. This study was performed primarily to gauge any information that would be useful for independent arts organisations. With the help of mixed method, with a direct comparison between the few selected organisations (case studies) and the sample respondents (received from thirteen different organisations from all around India) the author tries to understand the strategies that make certain arts organisations successful. This research also hopes to be helpful in discovering a few hidden aspects of these organisations which are usually not recognised and get blurred by terms like one man army, motivational unpaid volunteers, etc.
