A Piece About Us: Cultural Heritage and the LGBTQ Community

Abstract

This study explores “A Piece About Us” (APAU), which was developed between 2014 and 2015 in Turin thanks to the support of the Compagnia di San Paolo. It was created from a collaboration between the Young Muslims Association of Italy and the Cultural Association Passages. The project proposed to use different artistic forms to tell about the cultural heritage in museums, libraries and archives of the city emphasizing people less than 30 years old. During the training course, which involved twenty young people between the ages of 21 and 30 who are passionate about various artistic disciplines and specialized in different cultural and professional fields, APAU tried to respond to specific requests of its first beneficiaries. This is how the “Nuovi Percorsi” group was born, which organized LGBTQ themes. In this way objects, documents, photographs and books have emerged from their places of conservation and exposure and have become sources of inspiration for the realization of theatrical and artistic performances, videos, readings and role-playing games. Many products have been presented to the public at the Circolo Maurice and Casa Arcobaleno, associations that have been working in Italy for years against gender discrimination, in three different events entitled “Magnificent Presences”, “Looking for Marilyn” and “Nuovi Percorsi”. The goal was to make these meetings become opportunities for in-depth study and reflections.
