The Role of the Museum and Gallery For Preserving the Past: A Malaysian Experience

Abstract

There are many heritage museum and gallery in Malaysia which comes from historic buildings. Most of the historic buildings have their own unique character and beautifully preserved. Through the building appearance and interior character, it has the power to notify the story of its past. Some of them are solely landmarks such as monuments or fortresses. There are also standing as a sign of pride like the palace and the mosque. And also a place as commemorating the black tale of the country. Therefore, one of the recommended solutions is to preserve past history is restore the building and rehabilitate interior scheme of these historic buildings and presenting it as a display medium in museum or gallery. There are several roles that need to be highlighted by the museum and gallery to preserve the past, there are; preserving the site in situ; preserving the building; preserving the interior and function of the space; and promoting the intangible and tangible heritage. This paper will overview literature to portray a museum and gallery play their role in preserving past and will be considered factors in designing of museum and gallery. This paper also explores the beneficial outcome that visitors seek and obtain from a role of museum and gallery. These insights will enable museum and gallery practitioners to better understand and encounter their visitors’ multiple demand and expectations.
