Museums and the Movies: How a Popular Medium Can Best Be Presented in the Confines of the Modern Museum

Abstract

Must movies and museums be competing pleasures? Can entertainment be “edutainment?” Museum-goers are diverse in their demographics, as well as their sensibilities, and media savvy. Multiple modes of presentation in a variety of spaces such as those presented by the Guillermo del Toro and Tim Burton at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art will result in universal inclusivity through devised forms of engagement. Both exhibits placed visitors in the exhibition, where they participated in the cultural dialogue. Museums must reflect their changing world, transforming readers, viewers, and audiences into users, players, and characters, or be lost in the digital dust.
