The Social Model: From the Edge to the Heart

Abstract

How do we take marginalized communities and put them in the heart of the museum? Sharing experience of curating the Turbine Hall, I discuss the “social model” for Tate Modern. How do we take marginalised communities and put them in the heart of the museum? How do we demonstrate and foster more diverse communities and involve them in the creation of ground breaking projects with artists? Sharing the experience of curating the Turbine Hall, I will talk through the “social model” for Tate Modern, illustrating the importance of working with world class artists and placing them in the centre of community and regeneration contexts. I will discuss artists projects such as “The Bridge” a large scale performance with artist Peter Liverside and 500 community choir singers and the current Turbine hall installation with artists Superflex who champion notions such as “radical participation.” I will also share experience of how the thinking that informs these projects and programmes have shifted institutional thinking within the museum so that engaging with communities is considered a priority rather than an add on.
