Piura's Social Museum: A Online, Inclusive, and Collaborative University Museum

Abstract

The Piura region, in the north of Peru, is an area rich in material and immaterial cultural heritage that, nevertheless, presents an incipient museological development, originated mainly by the scarce economic resources destined for this purpose by the responsible entities, which does not has favored a fruitful public-museum-knowledge relationship. In this context, the University of Piura, through its participation in the Erasmus+ UMETECH project (University and Media Technology for Cultural Heritage), proposes the interdisciplinary creation of the Piura’s Social Museum, a collaborative online museum that seeks to promote visibility and access to the cultural heritage of the region (artisan, industrial, statuary, pre-Hispanic, gastronomic, etc.). This creative collaboration is the support of the project and is achieved thanks to social information, which allows an inclusive online construction of images, galleries, and comments. This format provides multiple views of the addressed heritage for curators, adult visitors, and children visitors; therefore, including the family group and local craftsmen, seeking to positively impact the development of the community and the relationship of the museum with the community.
