Museum's Role in the Tourism Industry

Abstract

Museology is an interesting educational subject which deals with museum matters with a view to discovering the light of past civilizations in order to educate the people. Museums and tourism are two different organisations with separate aims and objectives. Museums are institutions housing original specimens within the four walls of a building, with limited manpower and resources. Tourism is an agency with better financial resources, manpower, and wider scope of activity. The basic difference lies in their outlook and approach. Museums are cultural and educational institutions which create awareness amongst people without making any profit by providing useful services to the tourists. However, both are closely related to each other so far as the interests of the tourists are concerned. The paper traces a brief background of both the disciplines of Museum studies as well as Tourism and there by attempts to highlight the need to perceive and understand both.
