Museums in Slovenia as Cultural and Educational Agents: A Regional Museum, a Museum of the Future

Abstract

Museums in Slovenia – twelve national, thirty-five regional, and many local and privately-owned – play an important role in social development and lifelong learning. They meet visitors’ needs, and follow at the same time strict professional standards and guidelines set by the International Council of Museums - ICOM. They represent and preserve material, immaterial, and natural heritage. The museums are institutes that teach and assemble people. With their diverse educational and andragogic programmes comprising history, nature, science, faith, and art, the museums offer multiple ways and forms of learning through experience with the help of knowledgeable and skilled experts and artists. But in particular, regional museums are the ones that play a decisive role in education, interinstitutional cooperation, and preservation of heritage in each region. The cultural and natural heritage they preserve is regularly the subject of numerous national and European projects. Slovenian museums boast several nominations and acquisitions of prestigious European Museum Forum’s awards: Kobarid Museum - Council of Europe Award; Idrija Town Museum - Micheletti Award for technical heritage. Special EMF award went to Murska Sobota Regional Museum, the Coal Mining Museum of Slovenia, the Pivovarna Union Brewery Museum in Ljubljana; and the Slovenian Alpine Museum (ŽIVA AWARD 2017).
