Art of Diplomacy: Using Cultural Objects as a Bridge to Understanding

Abstract

This study weighs the importance of using cultural objects, in the form of art and artifacts, as tools in international cultural diplomacy. This form of cultural diplomacy ensures that ideological differences on a global level can be assuaged through the similarities we can all find in art, not the differences. Our loves, hates, and passions can play a unifying role in diplomacy, and artifacts can make the bridge to make it happen. Ultimately, through respect and recognition of diversity and heritage the world over, we can make the inroads that are required for peace. The methods and discussions to be used will rely on my experience as curator for the office of Cultural Heritage for the United States State Department. Wherein, I travel to embassies around the globe working with distinct cultures, peoples, history, and art.
