The contributions converge in the question how the form of images open and reshape various discursive contexts. The papers are structured in two areas of inquiry. The first area of inquiry focuses on images in the specific situation of teaching design. Images encourage the design students’ reflection by thinking about images through image theory as well as by making them. Both image approaches challenge the common design practice and lead to a specific form of research namely practice-led iconic research. (Paper 1) With the analysis of historical and actual class-room exercises, we explore and discuss changes of meaning when images are modified or re-combined. (Paper 2) The second area of inquiry asks what influences the discursive effect of images in various social situations. How can different forms of images foster inclusion e.g. in regaining language skills in the rehabilitation of aphasic patients or in public participatory processes of urban planning? (Paper 3) How are different realities negotiated through material agencies in the context of portraits and architecture? (Paper 4) How does the designer interact with the functionality of the software and its cultural implications? (Paper 5) All contributions were developed within the research colloquium of the Visual Communication Institute of the FHNW Academy of Art and Design in Basel Switzerland. They reflect a specific approach to practice based image research.
