Impermanence in the Context of the Amazon Forest

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
We present this study on Japanese aesthetics, linked to the concepts of impermanence - wabi-sabi -, in the context of the experience in the Amazon. The investigation was born from a net of associations between concepts that start from Zen Buddhism to cycles climatic, biochemical, and behavioral aspects of Amazonian life. From Zen, the experience and intuitive perception are placed as fundamental elements in the understanding the theme and the establishment of its relations with art-making. The life in the Amazon, walking as a process of art, participatory observation, and visual ethnography were adopted as artistic research methodology. We sought to carry out a dialogue between perceptions of sensations and meanings of the experience in the forest. Thus, based on the qualitative method, immersion has become a relevant aspect for the development of research in the arts. The records of memories, reports, and annotations, proved to be quite effective for documenting subjective aspects. With reference to Suzuki Shunryu (1994), one of the founders of Zen in the United States, were relevant segments for the process as it places the beginner, empty, receptive, and alert state of the mind as an axis of his teachings. Such a state would provide an even more immersive experience and also attentive to the philosophical questions of the perception of beauty according to the aesthetic terms studied. Each report reflected what was observed in the forest, being able to offer in its readings, an individual atmosphere of the creative process, and the look of the artist.

Documentary Photography as Vocation
Brian O'Neill
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This paper explores the works of the late anthropologist Frank Cancian, specifically considering Another Place (1974), Orange County Housecleaners (2006) and Lacedonia – An Italian Town, 1957 (2017). Bringing Cancian out of contemporary obscurity is useful for visually oriented scholars in the social sciences from a theoretical and methodological standpoint - he simultaneously practices a documentary photography "without guarantees," and maintained a deep commitment to cultural relativism, distinguishing his practice as distinct from certain contemporaries like John Collier Jr. Re-reading his works together reveals Another Place as a point of departure, concretizing Cancian’s vision of documentary photography as vocation. Separating it from “professional” anthropology, Cancian sought new modes of expression through photography, thus confronting an enduring problem for visual scholars – how to engage the world analytically vs. aesthetically.

In Flux - Actor-network Theory, Poetry, and Critical Making
Kelsey Dufresne
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The fluidity of literature, especially in relation to time, readers, and understanding, aligns with Actor-network Theory (ANT), which posits a greater focus on all facets of a network of associations, including non-human actants, and can assist in encouraging students to consider broader relationships written into the poem, as well as those manifested by the relationship/s between the reader, writer, speaker and poem itself. In exploring this argument, I studied "Morning Glories” by Mary Oliver (1994) to address how can we study and learn from a poem by prioritizing ANT? Thus, by employing critical making to construct a video and visual portrayals of the poetic elements and networks, we are able to see how they are constantly in flux, moving and evolving, and specific to any specific reader of a poem. As such, ANT may lead students to also ask what is the very page saying and what is it saying to the speaker and to me? How are these different? In doing so, this work contributes to the growing field of digital and experiential learning and falling at the nexus of theory and praxis for poetry pedagogy and digital humanities.

Spatially-immersive Networked Composites
Tom Milnes
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This paper engages new artistic production in an examination of the aesthetics of 3D imaging technologies. In particular, the research concerns the photogrammetric image and its aesthetics as encountered in art practice. Critical discourse on photogrammetry in art practice is underexplored. Where such discourse does exist, for instance in and around the work of Forensic Architecture, it has tended to focus on questions of functionality. This study proposes a new starting point for an understanding of photogrammetric representation in its own terms. The investigation finds the partiality of recent critical research writing on photogrammetry to be too heavily conditioned by discourses of photography. Such discussion fails to appreciate the computational mediation at the heart of photogrammetry. This research of photogrammetry outlines a way of foregrounding qualities of layering and assemblage through computation as pivotal to understanding the image. These images are created through algorithmic analysis resulting in the formation of a computational, navigable environment. New forms of Media Archaeological methods are employed, focusing on glitch practices that explore this evolving technology. Under certain conditions, peculiar errors and aberrations occur. These attributes reveal a glimpse of the image’s materiality by showing estimations and extrapolations of algorithms. Methods devised include generating the conditions for such errors to better understand the aesthetics of Spatially-immersive Networked Composites (SiNCs), both on screen and removed from navigable, screen-based space. This research sets the conditions for discussion for emergent forms of imagery, encouraging wider and more critical engagement with the photogrammetric image and its associated, evolving technologies.

Cropping the Composition

Black American boys encounter an intricately woven set of obstructions when seeking help for their mental health concerns in public school settings. The researcher argues that these barriers are rooted in infrastructural inequalities, institutional disparities, and historical oppression. Specifically, he asserts that the obstacles are centered around the symbiotic interaction between environmental toxicity and economic insecurity. The digital image or photograph has become an inextricable part of our lives. We use this tool incessantly to communicate with each other on a daily basis. Moreover, the dominant manner in which children and youth engage with one another is through photographs (e.g. social media platforms and texting). This researcher contends that the picture will be instrumental in how individuals heal from and cope with the inadvertently adverse economic, environmental, and emotional outcomes from their experiences with this most recent shared worldwide health catastrophe. This arduous process requires the implementation of interventions that are innovative, least restrictive, and sensitive to combat the compounded issues emerging from an unforeseen tragedy. This researcher proposes using photo-based methods of qualitative inquiry to evoke more emotive explanations that will help in comprehending and mending these hindrances to the mental health (help-seeking) experiences (MHHSE) of pre-adolescent Black American boys. Specifically, this form of examination serves as a culturally empathic or anti-oppressive manner to highlight their unique mental health narratives.
