The Signification of Women

Abstract

During my time as an academic, I found myself drawn back to the figure of the woman, particularly in media. In my graduate literary theory class, I was presented with the opportunity to analyze and critique established feminist theory and I had the idea to blend feminist theory with archetypal theory. Using both feminist theory and archetypal theory, I look at feminine archetypes and how they’re used in media to come up with four archetypes: the Babydoll, the Wonder Woman, the Slut, and the Angel in the House. Using both Northrop Frye and Gilbert and Gubar, I consider these theoretical concepts.
