The Transformative Potential of Image Making: A Phenomenological Study of the Experience of Art Therapy in a Mental Health Setting

Abstract

Eight participants were interviewed about their lived experience of attending open studio art therapy sessions at a mental health clinic. Phenomenological research protocols were utilised during the interviews, and later, to distil themes embedded in their interviews. Six themes were identified: Being in a different space; Finding a sense of agency; Re-framing the concept of mistakes; Being seen; Communicating experiences beyond words, and, Experiencing pleasure. The aim of the study was to expand the focus, depth, and breadth of our understanding of the therapeutic potential of creating imagery in a mental health setting and beyond.
