(Re)visioning Unknown Histories and the Gaps Between

Abstract

My practice research is concerned with how as witnesses of history, we reflect and imagine the past using cinematic language. The presentation will examine the material and narrative tropes of Pastness and outline how performance, text and film can transpose historic agency when re-imagining the past. The paper will discuss selected performance and text works, “Notes for a Performance – (Re) visioning and Ritual” (2017) and ‘Notes for a Performance – (Re) visioning a Smoky Meeting’ (2017/18) developed during artist residencies at the Tetley Gallery (Leeds UK) and the Portico Library (Manchester UK). It will consider how working in response to collections and archives I can (as an artist) present an alternative historicity of the cultural institution.
