Poverty, Stigma and Mental Health

Abstract

This paper outlines two recent UK studies. The first study shows how different forms of poverty stigma leads to poor mental health. The second study shows how mental health stigma affects those who experience poverty and other forms of discrimination differently. Taken together, we consider how social stigma and discrimination underlie wider health inequalities, and implications for health promotion and public health research and policy.
