A Chessboard Called Urban Health System, Urban Health Resilience, Disease, and Climate Change : An Explorative Study of Metropolitan Cities of India

Abstract

The urbanisation pace in India has been witnessing fast urbanisation since last decade. The urban population of India which is approximately 285 million people is estimated to reach 534 million by 2026. Percentage decadal growth in 2001-2011 of urban areas was 31.8% from 31.5 in 1991-2001, while the decadal growth rate of rural areas was negative -5.9 in 2001-11. In such a scenario urban health not only becomes crucial for health accessibility but also has huge importance to sketch how the urban health system works in Indian cities. To begin with the urban health systems in India are mainly fragmented to meet the urban health challenges in general. More so, the worrisome aspects in developing nations are the ever-increasing incidents of road rage, trauma injuries causing rising percentage of mortality in urban areas and climatic impact on the marginal sections of the society. The aim of this study is to appraise the robustness of the urban health governance, incidence of climatic extreme events due to aggravated, unchecked urban processes and examine the impact of such events on the public. The data has been acquired from the meteorological department of all major metropolitan cities and the number of reported cases of diarrhoea and in some parts cases of malaria and dengue are discussed. The paper provides useful insight for urban health governance in such climatic events in urban areas by cross-examining the events, health impacts and urban health services in India.
