Abstract
This study presents MSMU faculty and students’ collaboration with the HEAAL Collective to combat racial health disparities in Orange County, CA. Using a policy analysis framework, the research team identified key issues from HEAAL’s community surveys and devised evidence-based interventions across five areas. Drawing from public health, sociology, and community development, the interdisciplinary team crafted comprehensive solutions addressing racial health disparities’ multifaceted nature and social determinants. Research team participants detail interventions targeting healthcare access, mental health, nutrition, racial bias, and health literacy/advocacy, providing insights into community-based research, evidence-based interventions, and interdisciplinary collaboration’s pivotal role in addressing complex public health challenges in the United States and in other communities. This study offers a unique view of an active learning process that included faculty, students, and non-profit organizations actively contributing to health equity and social justice efforts in Southern California.
