Exploring Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment for Eczema: A Descriptive Analysis of Syndrome Identification and Medication Frequency

Abstract

In recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in the prevalence of eczema. The standard methods of treatment for eczema involve the use of topical steroid ointments and oral antihistamines. This study examines the common eczema syndromes encountered in clinical practice and analyses the frequency of medication administration for eczema treatment. From June 2019 to December 2022, the Southern District Chinese Medicine Clinic conducted a study involving 250 eczema patients. Only patients who were 18 years or older and met the diagnostic criteria for atopic dermatitis (AD) according to the validated U.K. criteria, which has also been validated for the Chinese population, were included in the study. The study utilised association rule mining and social network analysis to identify common combinations of Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) and analyse the herbal medicine network. By exploring syndrome differentiations and CHM patterns, this study provides valuable insights into TCM treatment for eczema. The dataset consisted of 250 cases, with 37.6% (94 cases) being attributed to the Yin deficiency and Damp-heat syndrome, 21.6% (54 cases) to the Spleen deficiency with Dampness stagnation syndrome, and 11.2% (28 cases) to the Spleen deficiency with blood dryness syndrome. Throughout the study, a total of 91 different Chinese Herbal Medicines (CHM) were prescribed. Cortex Dictamni, Rehmannia glutinous, and Tribulus terrestris were the most frequently utilised CHM.
