Lived Experiences of Female Guards

Abstract

Individuals who are working in the security field offer protection not only to people but also to properties. In today’s generation where the world is gradually transforming into a profession with more equal opportunities, women are becoming active agents of peace in the field of security. It is believed that they have been an important asset to the world of security due to essential qualities of compassion, connection, and understanding. This study evaluates the lived experiences, challenges, and coping mechanisms of the female guards. Narrative inquiry and phenomenological approach were utilized to discover and describe the lived experiences of guards working in Guiguinto, Bulacan. Results show that the majority of the female guards are single mothers. Due to the long working hours, their personal life is being sacrificed to make the ends meet. In terms of their salary, they are only receiving the minimum for working for twelve hours every day. In addition, they have no idea of the benefits that go alongside their work like hazard pay. It is noticeable that what’s most important to them is that they receive their salaries. Moreover, female guards still experience discrimination at work because of customers and other co-workers. In conclusion, while there might be equality in the workplace, in the field of security, issues still exist that can be addressed. This study is one of the tools to achieve change in the field of gender and equality.
