The Attitude of Gratitude: Play TAG to improve your community View Digital Media

Innovation Showcase
Chris Gordon

Throughout one’s life, they face challenges of various sorts. Some challenges are daily, run-of-the-mill hurdles; others can drastically change their life. The more life-changing the challenge, the more imperative it is to have a strong sense of gratitude. Studies have shown that gratitude provides a “shield”, allowing them to handle those obstacles more successfully. I created a moving, entertaining, and practical session that provides participants with a three-step process that they can implement that very day and increase their gratitude, positivity, and resilience so they can benefit themselves, their family members, friends, and colleagues, and more.

Geodata - an Evidence-based Dynamic English Health Service Support Platform: An Innovative Approach to Understanding the Population and Its Healthcare Needs View Digital Media

Innovation Showcase
Melina Papalampropoulou,  Jan Warnke

The Geodata project was established as a collaboration between Jeffery Hale – Saint Brigid’s hospital (JHSB), Jeffery Hale Community Partners, and Jan Warnke, a researcher geographer, after receiving funding from Health Canada and the Official Languages Health Program in 2018. The main objective of this project is to develop a real-time geospatial data access model to generate scientific knowledge about the English-speaking population served by the JHSB and its needs. Harvesting the value of the underused clinical and administrative data, this project integrates different layers of data including Canada Census and Centre Local de Services Communautaires - CLSC (Local Community Service Centre in English) data, and localizes them geospatially. This allows integration of data from different resources, cross-referencing of databases to obtain information and geolocation of administrative data. The Geodata project is very agile and the model can easily be adapted to the needs of the decision-makers and the questions that they would like to have answered. In addition, the project can ensure continuity of services in a sustainable way by identifying regions with low penetration of services. Policy makers working on public health could use the Geodata model to continuously monitoring the everchanging needs of the general population and community minorities ensuring fast and efficient adaptation of services depending on demand. The model could also allow predictions related with how these needs could be changed in the future allowing practical (re)allocation of recourses to respond to those needs.

Courageous Well-Being for Nurses: Finding a Path to Personal and Professional Renewal View Digital Media

Innovation Showcase
Donna Gaffney

The pandemic was not the sole cause of the healthcare catastrophe that continues to sweep across the globe. It did, however, serve as a lens to clearly see the problems that had been there all along. In an ever growing chorus of voices school nurses expressed their anger, frustration and fear. Although their own health was at risk, nurses problem-solved, healed themselves and each other. In this presentation attendees will be introduced to powerful words and images from nurses across the US and the globe —Australia, India, Great Britain, Wales, Italy, Ireland, and the Navajo Nation. Their narratives will be accompanied by research that is international in scope and covers topics in psychology, mindfulness, nursing, medicine, the arts and social sciences. The presenter and the nurse storytellers bring a unique perspective to individual and collective well-being that extends far beyond more traditional approaches of self-care. Strategies and practices will focus on self-compassion, stress management and mindfulness, as well as evidence-based practices for alleviating stress through nature as well as respite and joy through the arts and creativity. The profound healing effects of advocacy and activism on health and well-being are introduced. The shared responsibility of confronting the tumultuous healthcare environment is emphasized—especially the burnout, vicarious trauma, grief, and moral distress left in its wake. Finally, attendees will learn how to access the benefits of professional support to continue their well-being journey and will receive an excerpt from the new book Courageous Well-Being for Nurses, Strategies for Renewal.

A Systematic Review of the Online Educational Setting and its Effects on the Fundamental Skills of Learners with Learning Disabilities in Basic Education View Digital Media

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Deborah Zvanyadza Rwafa

This systematic literature review posed the question of the existence of studies addressing the effects of online learning on the fundamental skills of learners with learning disabilities. Online educational settings have a long tradition around the world, and became more pronounced during the COVID 19 pandemic. With the growing trend in home-schooling coupled with a digitally transforming world and disruptive thinking, the trend towards online learning is expected to grow. There is currently an open debate over the balance between pros and cons of online learning, and how these platforms interact with students with learning disabilities and their well-being. The review was performed using a three-step process that included an exhaustive search of scientific literature databases, the exclusion and inclusion criteria for selecting studies, and literature analysis and synthesis. The results carryout that: i) there is a lack of studies that focus on e-learning, addressing the issue of accessibility for learners with cognitive impairments (N = 37) with a main focus on design guidelines rather than effective assessment; ii) a weak inclusion of accessibility standards (N = 11) and iii) a shallow inclusion of special education results (N = 9), with a purpose dominated mainly by specific neuro-psychological disorders such as ADHD and dyslexia, rather than on cognitive impairments (such as attention and memory) as recommended by the International Classification of Functioning. The findings are summarized by using assessment design recommendations, promoting an interdisciplinary approach whilst integrating cognitive, educational, and computer sciences in order to establish more attainable e-learning systems.
