Pregnancy, Dietary Habits, and Physical Activity: A Sociocultural Study

Abstract

Pregnancy is important in the life of both the mother and the fetus together, where coincide with this stage several physiological and psychological changes occuring in the pregnant woman and the fetus. The current descriptive study aims to measure the pattern of lifestyle behaviors among a sample of 300 of Kuwaiti pregnant women, and aims to acknowledge Kuwaiti culture impacts on women’s food habits and physical activities during this stage. Questionnaire is the main tool to obtain data and it comprised of five sections: 1) socio-cultural data; 2) Information about the main sources of pregnancy and the health condition of the pregnant (nutritional information about pregnancy, information about physical activity and movement during pregnancy, number of pregnancies, number of abortion, and exercise habits before); 3) A general healthy lifestyle behaviors of pregnant women (take enough sleep during the night, eating healthy foods, abstain from drinking coffee, stop work); 4) The cultural aspect of lifestyle among the sample study ;5) awareness of basic information of pregnancy (visiting the gynecological clinic, eating foods rich in iron to prevent anemia, intake of calcium pills, periodically measuring blood pressure). The data show a statistically significant relationship between participants’ age, religious affiliation, ethnic background, and cultural beliefs about daily lifestyle habits and physical activity practice during the antenatal period (P < 0.05).
