Educational Strategy for Health Promotion in Vulnerable Territories: Extension Course for Social Digital Technologies for Health

Abstract

Neglected diseases, as a health emergency in Brazil, have demanded communication campaigns in the prevention and promotion of health in line with new educational strategies. With this, we might include in this process the young public, who live in vulnerable areas of large urban centers. So, to achieve this goal, we propose educational collaborative practices by placing young people as protagonists in their own histories of changing the quality of their health, as well as the health of their community through the construction of social technologies (STs). However, these STs are the result of the collective creation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) that encourage young people in their respective processes of citizen participation in formatting Social Digital Technologies for Health (SDTH). In order to elaborate SDTH, we have formated an Extension Course, 30h, before or after their regular clsses. Therefore, we are suggesting an innovative educational strategy that proposes ArtScience methodologies in a teaching-learning-non-formal environment for health promotion, allowing connections between the sciences, arts, humanities and technology. It was applied in three public schools located in vulnerable territories, with groups of 25 individuals in each institution (totaling 75 students). SDTH were produced as blogs, videos and digital games on arboviruses and tuberculosis. Since health education aims at preventive work as the main tool for health promotion, the present experience is aiming for new communication channels through a collaborative, citizen and entrepreneurial proposal in order to impact the community through action of the apprentices themselves.
