Mental Health Counseling Needs of Women in Internally Displaced Persons Camp, Ogbaru, Anambra State, Nigeria

Abstract

The objective of the study was to determine the effects and the extent to which women in IDPs camp in Ogbaru, Anambra state Nigeria are affected by displacement. Also the study aimed at identifying the counselling intervention measures that will support the mental health of women in IDPs camp in Ogbaru Nigeria. Ex- post factor and correlational research designs were adopted for the study. Thirty (30) displaced women participated in the study and were selected through purposive, convenient and simple random sampling techniques. A self-structured fixed alternative interview schedule consisting of 20 items was used to collect data for the study. The test- retest reliability of the instrument yielded a coefficient of 0.75. Mean score was used to answer the research questions while Pearson r was used to determine the relationship between effects of displacement and mental health of women in the IDPs camp. Results: The results indicated that displacement impacted negatively on the mental health of women manifesting in serious discomfort. Also the study revealed various counseling intervention measures of supporting the mental health of displaced women. Conclusion: Displaced women in IDPs camp suffer mental health disorder as a result of the devastating effects of the unfortunate incidents attached to the displacement. They therefore need mental health counseling such as emotional first aid, trauma counseling, and social support services.
