Poor Diet Quality Among Adolescents: Individual Dietary Diversity Score Assesement

Abstract

Consuming diversified food during adolescent period is essential to build healthy and active mind for their later life. Food prices increased in the local market due to less production of crops. Institution based cross sectional study was conducted among Woldia Secondary School students. From the total of 4095, 411 sample were used for analysis that were selected through simple random sampling technique. So as to collect the pertinent data semi structured interview was used as a major tool. Data were into Epi-Data version 3.1 and Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 used for analysis. Descriptive statistical data analysis method was used. Bivariate and multivariable binary logistic analysis were done and odds ratio with 95% confidence interval was computed to measure an association. Results: Mean dietary diversity score was 4.73 with a standard deviation of ±1.186. Proportion of low dietary diversity was 49.1%. Being female (AOR =5. 526, 95% CI: 3.447-8.859), adolescents whose mother were Secondary and above education level (AOR=0. 27, 95%CI: 0.153-0.477), living in family size five and above (AOR= 2.092, 95CI%: 1.31-3.34) and poor knowledge about nutrition (AOR=4. 564, 95% CI: 2.727-7.639) were significantly associated with low dietary diversity. Low dietary diversity was associated with sex, knowledge on nutrition, maternal education level and family size. Therefore, nutrition intervention program should focus on nutrition education to scale up diversified food consumption among adolescents.
