A Transdisciplinary Approach Using Design Thinking to Improve the Accessibility of Pap Test

Abstract

Cervical cancer is completely preventable if detected in its early stages. However, it continues to be a public health problem worldwide and is one of the threats to the lives of women. The central strategy of prevention has been screening with cervical-uterine cytology. Nevertheless, in countries with upper-middle-income economies as Colombia, implementation of Pap test, a screening method, has not been successful due to administrative and logistical obstacles of health systems, infrastructure, social misinformation, women matter of indifference, long distances between household and healthcare centers, and women in lower-resource settings. Accordingly, we have conducted a transdisciplinary approach following Design Thinking method to tackle those barriers out which impede health services accessibility in Cali, Colombia. In this paper, we present how the team understood the challenge, how the team empathized with the users and different actors around the problem, and the main learnings obtained after testing different solution prototypes with users.
